Our Town

Cootamundra is part of the traditional lands of The Wiradjuri People.

Cootamundra appears to be a corruption of the aboriginal word “Gooramundra” and means turtles, swamp or low lying. In the early days a turtle unique to here could be found and the area was based around a swamp area. Most of that land has now been reclaimed.

We are approximately half way between Sydney and Melbourne and just a few kilometres north of the Hume Highway on the Olympic Highway. It is well worth getting of the Main Hume Highway and exploring this great rural area. It is based on a strong farming community of sheep, cattle, wheat and canola. We form part of the South West Slopes.

The town has been a strong railway town in the past and lies on the junction of the main Sydney/ Melbourne line and the line to the west. For railway buffs we are just north of the famous Bethungra Spiral. An engineering feat of earlier times of steam.

The Town is renowned for its’ safe and friendly lifestyle. Why not call in, talk to the locals, stay a night or two and visit the surrounding area.
